Yesterday, Tencent released its Q4 and full-year financial report for2022.

The company's R&D investment exceeded 60 billion yuan for the year, and it plans to continue to increase its investment in technology research and development in the future.

Tencent hopes to create more user, commercial, and social value through technology and innovation.

Today, in the field of next-generation technology that is of global concern, Tencent has launched a special initiative called the "CarbonX Program" with partners from multiple sectors.

This is not about searching for "carbon", but rather searching for friends who can achieve carbon neutrality together.

This is the first large-scale funding program initiated by a technology company in the field of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) in China, with a funding scale in the billions of yuan.

The application link for the Tencent "CarbonX Program" is now available.

To briefly introduce, CCUS technology is an important means of reducing carbon emissions and achieving sustainable development. It is also one of the key technologies essential for achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

Tencent hopes to innovate through this model, introducing funds, technology, partners, and landing scenarios for CCUS, and working with more partners to use technological innovation to support carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, and address the global challenges brought by climate change to human society.

It is expected to land 5-10 cutting-edge technology pilots, accelerate 5-10 CCUS startups, incubate several sustainable tools or platforms, and ultimately achieve a reduction of millions of tons of emissions.

Explain what CCUS is.

Carbon neutrality is not just about simply reducing emissions or adopting new energy sources.

It requires a combination of various green, low-carbon technologies.

Among them, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) plays a unique and irreplaceable role and significance.

For example, the significant role of CCUS in large-scale emissions reduction from fossil fuels has already been demonstrated. In industries such as steel and cement, CCUS is an indispensable technology for deep decarbonization.

This technology has enormous potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in industrial processes, ensuring energy security, achieving sustainable development, and is of great significance for China's comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development.

Moreover, it can convert carbon dioxide into a valuable resource and even generate economic benefits in the future.

Since CCUS is so powerful, can't it be promoted more quickly?

The research team also wants to speed things up.

However, CCUS is not a single technology, it is a multi-technology industry with long processes, cross-disciplinary knowledge, and diverse routes, involving multiple disciplines such as chemistry, geology, energy, materials, and cross-innovation.

Many of these technologies are still in the research and experimental stage, and face a series of challenges to scale up from the laboratory to large-scale industrial applications, such as high risk, high cost, long construction periods, and lack of basic data.

Large enterprises also want to apply CCUS.

However, due to the large investment, high uncertainty of returns, and insufficient incentive mechanisms, existing incentives are not enough to fully stimulate the enthusiasm of enterprises. They hope to have a mature technology that can be directly used for scaling up replication.

On the one hand, there is technology, on the other hand, there is a thirst for technology landing, but there is a lack of an innovative model to promote it.

The " CarbonX Program" was born to address this issue.

Tencent's " CarbonX Program" aims to fill this gap.

Funded by Tencent, the program focuses on CCUS technology, helping these cutting-edge technologies land in industrial scenarios for the first time and create demonstration benchmark cases.

This is the first step out of the laboratory and is crucial for large-scale application.

At the same time, Tencent hopes to incubate startups with positive economic potential, helping to build basic capabilities for CCUS technology, such as databases, carbon sequestration benefit monitoring tools, and digital capabilities.

The aim is to help the next generation of technology to move out of the laboratory more quickly.

Tencent's partners are also deeply involved in the plan.

These include industrial partners such as Conch Group Co., China Resources Cement Holdings Limited, China Resources Power Holdings Co., Guangdong Energy Group Co., Ltd., HBIS Group Co., Ltd., NIO, Saudi Basic Industry Corporation (SABIC), Shenzhen Energy Corporation, and Vanke, as well as investment partners such as Matrix Partners China, NIO Capital, OGCI China Climate Investments, and Sequoia China, and ecological partners such as the CCUSA, Global CCS Institute, Guangdong Southern Carbon Capture and Storage Industry Center, and Impact Hub Shanghai.

They will open up their own capabilities and resources to jointly promote the sustainable development and innovation of CCUS technology.

In addition, Tencent has also gathered a panel of 17 top experts who have deep expertise in the CCUS field both domestically and internationally. They will provide valuable advice for project selection, execution, and implementation.

Turning carbon dioxide into stone was once a bold imagination of scientists.

Today, it is gradually becoming a reality.

Tencent and Iceland's carbon storage company Carbfix will collaborate to build the first demonstration project of carbon mineralization storage in China.

By converting carbon dioxide into a water-soluble solution and injecting it into basalt, the carbon dioxide will naturally mineralize and turn into underground rocks within a few years.

Currently, Tencent has completed the site selection work.

More experiments will be conducted in the near future to accumulate experience and help catalyze the large-scale application of cutting-edge technology.

We also hope to explore more sustainable development paths with our technology and innovation capabilities and more partners, so that more cutting-edge technologies can grow and develop from this ecosystem.

The detailed application guidelines are as follows:
