Chinese electric vehicle battery maker CATL New Energy Technology Co. LTD (CATL) plans to enter the US energy storage market and debut a residential energy storage system at the 2019 Solar International (SPI) exhibition, according to media reports.

CATL is a world-renowned electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer. It says it has a 41% share of the global EV battery market and cooperates with BMW, Volkswagen, Daimler, Jaguar Land Rover and other car manufacturers.

The company decided to tap into the rapidly growing U.S. energy storage market. According to its promotion plan, two kinds of residential energy storage products using 100Ah batteries will be launched in the future. In addition, it will show its next-generation battery and rack products with improved energy density, up to 20 years of service life, and efficient air cooling systems that can save up to 30% of energy consumption.

"The demand for renewable energy is increasing around the world, and with it the need for energy storage infrastructure, especially in the United States," said Tan Libin, vice president of Energy storage at Suntec. We look forward to providing highly customized, secure and reliable energy storage solutions to its renewable energy companies and consumers."

The company said its first battery energy storage system will be for the residential market, with more energy storage applications in the future, and that its current plan is to develop energy storage in the U.S. so that it can deploy energy storage products with large-scale renewable power generation facilities.

The company's investment will yield even greater returns. According to a survey released by the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration (EIA), it is predicted that the deployed capacity of energy storage systems will reach 2500MW of installed capacity more than double by 2023, but these are mainly grid industry scale battery scale projects. That means the company needs to take advantage of its product strengths and apply its battery energy storage program to larger projects.

In December 2018, Suntec opened its first North American sales and service office in Detroit, Michigan. The company has not said whether or when to add additional manufacturing facilities to provide support for its entry into the United States energy storage market, but it seems very likely to.
