Housing construction has always been an invisible global "carbon emission": according to the latest report released by the United Nations Environment Programme, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions caused by buildings and construction account for more than 34% of global energy demand. But the traditional fossil fuel heating equipment in existing buildings is one of the main sources of greenhouse gases. Under the trend of carbon neutralization, accelerating the development of electrification and clean heating technology have become an inevitable requirement for global building decarbonization. High efficiency and energy-saving heat pump, as a sustainable energy technology of international concern, is considered to be an excellent solution for carbon reduction and emission reduction.

As a leader in the global air-conditioning industry and a practitioner of the green strategy, Midea has played an active role in the global energy transformation and green upgrading. Working closely with the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Consortium for Energy Efficiency, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U. S. Environmental Protection Agency) and other energy and environmental protection agencies have intensified efforts to tackle key and difficult problems in low-carbon heating technology, broadened the scope of ecological applications of heat pumps, deeply participated in and led the formulation of social green standards, and accelerated the electrification and decarbonization transformation of mainstream building scenarios.

This year, Midea has made new breakthroughs in the innovation of clean heating products, leading technology, and promoting large-scale application in overseas markets, and has handed in a model answer sheet for the long-standing problem of "decarbonization" transformation of urban buildings:

● Create a new category, research and develop ultra-low temperature and high energy efficiency window heat pump, effectively replacing the traditional steam heating equipment of urban multi-storey residential buildings, becoming the biggest winner of the "Clean Heat for All" global clean heat pump competition, and will be applied in urban heating on a large scale starting from New York, a low-carbon pioneer state;

● Set a new standard, as the only brand in China, to meet the challenge of cold climate heat pump initiated by the U.S. Department of Energy, to compete with a new generation of American air duct machines, to participate in the formulation of industry certification standards for ultra-low temperature heating and high energy efficiency, and to promote the green upgrade of household single-family residential gas furnace replacement market;

● Layout heat pump water heater and hydraulic module and other tracks, launch market-leading overall heat pump solutions to meet the needs of users for high-quality heating of air conditioning, floor heating and domestic hot water in different housing construction scenarios, while actively assuming social and environmental responsibilities, effectively achieving the unity of economic and environmental benefits.

New Model of Government-Enterprise Cooperation
Clean heating black technology
Solving the Problem of Green and Efficient Heating in American Urban Housing

The United States is one of the largest heating markets in the world. In New York, for example, the carbon emissions of its buildings account for 68% of its total emissions every year. The New York Housing Authority (NYCHA), as the largest "landlord" in New York City, urgently needs to find innovative solutions for clean heating, renovate old apartments and residential units in its jurisdiction, and achieve the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 80% by 2050.

However, it is not easy for urban multi-storey residential buildings to achieve "decarbonization and slimming". New York faces two major problems: one is the need to develop a new form of clean heat pump adapted to standard American window frames to reduce the difficulty and cost of replacement and installation in multi-storey urban residential buildings. The second is that it needs to find a new model of government-enterprise cooperation that can be popularized and replicated to effectively promote the active participation of all links in the industrial chain, so as to meet the scale and speed needed for the transformation of social green development.

Traditional Window Air Conditioner Used in New York Apartment Houses

As early as the 1990s, in order to reduce the energy consumption of traditional refrigerators in apartment buildings, NYCHA launched an innovative and environmentally friendly refrigerator competition for global household appliances manufacturers, and successfully guided manufacturers to develop smaller and more energy efficient refrigerators through a series of policies such as direct government procurement, incentive subsidies and so on. It has been applied on a large scale in the whole city and even in the whole country to achieve a comprehensive energy efficiency upgrade in society.

Nowadays, we should learn from the successful transformation experience in the past. New York, the pioneer state of low carbon, is once again bringing together industry – NYCHA in conjunction with the NY Power Authority and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority Authority) launched the "Clean Heat for All" clean heat pump competition to find innovative heat pump solutions around the world; Midea Air Conditioner, with innovative genes, has successfully developed a new category of ultra-low temperature and high energy efficiency window heat pump, defined the next generation of urban residential clean heating product form, and become the biggest winner in the competition, once again demonstrating Midea's technological innovation strength to the world!

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said at the launch: "New York has prioritized green investment in public housing in its climate change agenda to ensure that initiatives are effective and sustainable for all New Yorkers now and in the future.". New York will take the lead in driving technological innovation and be concerned by the rest of the country.

Several mainstream international media, including the Associated Press and New York Television, witnessed the ceremony. Among others, Local Today, reporting on the competition, said: "Midea, as a global leader in efficient heat pumps, has been identified as a key partner for innovative electrification solutions that can better meet the heating and cooling needs of existing multi-storey residential households and accelerate the transition from fossil fuels."

Ultra-low temperature window heat pump reported and praised by Bloomberg and other mainstream international media and official media

The heat pump solution contains a number of industry-first technologies to meet the needs of users and urban applications, providing new ideas to understand the problem:

● The first ultra-low temperature and high energy efficiency window heat pump based on waste heat recovery. It is the first time to realize the stable operation of non-electric auxiliary heating components at ultra-low temperature and improve the energy-saving level at ultra-low temperature. COP2.35 at -8.3 ° C, stable operation at -30 ° C.

● The first condensate management and reuse system, which can be installed on a large scale in urban buildings without water heating transformation. The product is provided with a condensed water circulation system, and the condensed water is sprayed out in a frost-like manner; At the same time, it helps to regulate indoor humidity and alleviate the dry discomfort caused by heating.

● For the first time, it is equipped with long-distance wireless free networking intelligent control technology, which can quickly link all heat pumps in the whole community and realize intelligent management and monitoring. Effectively deal with the installation problems of old unit buildings without reserved lines or without large-scale wiring, so that the existing power grid can adapt to large-scale electrification transformation.

Midea's ultra-low temperature and high energy efficiency window heat pump was ordered by NYCHA at a cost of $30 million for 20000 units as the first phase of pilot project installation and application. NYCHA expects that there will be short-term demand for hundreds of thousands of units within the scope of public housing construction in New York. This is an important milestone in the practice of green concept of air conditioning in the United States, which provides a valuable demonstration for the green transformation of urban buildings in the future. With the continuous promotion of the American Energy Efficiency Alliance, the new heat pump will be extended to the decarbonization of public and private buildings in Boston, Chicago and other cities, and is expected to become the mainstream fossil fuel replacement equipment for urban housing in North America, bringing sustainable, clean and efficient warmth to more families.

New Standard for Ultra-low Temperature Heating
The Only Chinese Brand to Meet the Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge of the US Department of Energy

In order to accelerate the upgrading of the global heat pump technology to a more environmentally friendly and efficient goal, Midea has made a new breakthrough in the development of ultra-low temperature heat pump technology this year. The Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge launched by the U.S. Department of Energy not only represents the highest COP heating coefficient of performance in North America, but also represents the development of global low-carbon heating solutions, laying a new energy efficiency standard for ultra-low temperature heating in the future industry.

Commenting on the challenge, US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said, "the cold climate heat pump challenge calls on businesses to develop, deploy, and market more energy-efficient heat pumps.". It will also provide more attractive options for consumers, allowing more households to save about $500 on their annual energy bills.

As the only Chinese brand, Midea participated in laying the certification standard of ultra-low temperature heating and high energy efficiency level with a new generation of American air duct heat pump (cop ≥ 2.4 and 100% capacity output at -15 ° C ultra-low temperature operation). This is the best embodiment of Midea's leading clean heating technology, and also a leading step for Midea to open up a new heat pump track, which means that Midea will play a leading role in promoting the green upgrade of the household single-building gas furnace replacement market.

Driven by key factors such as policy support for energy conservation, carbon reduction and emission reduction, and increased subsidies for energy efficiency, heat pumps, as an effective alternative to traditional heating products and the most effective way of electric heating, have witnessed a rapid growth in the commercialization of the industry. According to relevant research reports, the North American market has great opportunities for heat pumps, while China's heat pump export market to the United States still has a lot of room for growth: from 2020 to 2026, the heat pump market in the United States is expected to achieve a compound annual growth of about 15.8%, and the long-term market demand in the next five years will reach 35.6 million units; In 2021, China's exports of heat pumps to North America accounted for only 5.7%.

Together with overseas associations and green strategic partners in the industry, Midea has accelerated the development of heat pump applications with lower carbon footprint, lower installation requirements and lower maintenance and operation costs, and fully participated in the electrification and decarbonization of mainstream building scenarios: from urban multi-storey residential buildings to single-family villas, from air conditioning, to floor heating, to clean heating demand for domestic hot water, Midea adheres to the concept of green development and continues to provide more scenarios, more types of market-leading heat pump solutions. In the process of curbing global warming and promoting global energy transformation, Midea is duty-bound to fulfill its corporate social responsibility, facing the future with green technological innovation, dare to try first, and take practical actions to practice the road of global sustainable development.
