Uzbekistan 1GW Photovoltaic Project
The 1GW photovoltaic project in Uzbekistan, signed during the visit of the Uzbekistan Minister of Energy to China, involves the construction of two 500MW photovoltaic power stations in the Kashkadarya and Bukhara regions by China Gezhouba. Once fully operational, the project is expected to generate 24 billion kWh of electricity annually, reducing natural gas consumption by approximately 588 million cubic meters per year. This will effectively alleviate local power shortages and improve the local power supply structure. Additionally, the project will provide approximately 1,600 localized job opportunities and is expected to bring in $140 million in tax revenue for the local economy.
Uzbekistan, located in the heart of Central Asia, is rich in renewable energy resources, with approximately 97% being solar energy. According to the World Bank, the total solar energy potential in the region exceeds about 510 billion tons of oil equivalent. The Uzbekistan government is actively implementing an energy transition strategy, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with the abundant solar energy resources serving as a solid foundation for Uzbekistan's energy transition strategy. Under the "Belt and Road" initiative, Chinese enterprises have become a significant force in supporting Uzbekistan's energy transition. As a key participant in Uzbekistan's energy and infrastructure development, China Gezhouba has been extensively involved in various projects in the fields of green infrastructure, green energy, and green building materials in Uzbekistan, with a total investment and general contracting value of approximately $8.1 billion, of which around $2.4 billion has already been implemented or is in progress.
As a leading global solar technology company, Longi Green Energy is also a key participant in Uzbekistan's energy transition. Since 2022, Longi Green Energy has been involved in several projects led by the Uzbekistan government, including photovoltaic projects such as the Uzbekistan Tax Department building, the Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Combine, and the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages. The Hi-MO 7 modules used in the 1GW photovoltaic project in Uzbekistan are Longi Green Energy's latest product released this year, representing a new generation of high-efficiency modules designed specifically for use in desert and desert-like areas with high surface reflectivity and high environmental temperatures. Compared to mainstream double-sided modules, these modules can achieve a 3% increase in power generation. The project requires a total of 2.08 million modules, which will be transported in approximately 3,000 containers, delivered in batches via 60 China-Europe freight trains, known as the "Chang'an" trains, to Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, and then transported to the project site by truck.
The grid connection of the first phase of the 1GW photovoltaic project in Uzbekistan represents another milestone in Chinese enterprises' support for Uzbekistan's energy transition, setting a new example for overseas energy cooperation under the "Belt and Road" initiative. It also instills confidence in domestic enterprises to deepen their involvement in new energy development in Central Asia. In the future, in the stable and sustainable development of China and Central Asian countries, "Chinese photovoltaics," as a new symbol of China, will fully leverage its global leading advantages to build cooperative bridges in fields such as energy transformation, technological innovation, and talent development, contributing more to the high-quality development of the "Belt and Road" initiative.
