Project Overview

In 2023, the International School of Beijing started the installation of a solar panel project initiated by a dedicated group of high school students who first proposed the idea in 2019. Their vision aimed to transform our school into a more sustainable campus by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and reducing stress on the national electric grid. After garnering support from parents, staff, and the school community, they successfully presented their plan to the Board of Trustees and school administrators. While our students faced challenges and their project was paused in the years 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID pandemic. When the time was appropriate this project was taken over by younger students who were inspired by those leading students, and they continued their advocacy and research to see this project being fully approved in the 2022 year.2023 年,北京顺义国际学校正式启动由学生发起的太阳能电池板项目。

The installation of the project unfolded in two phases. Phase One, completed in 2023, involved the installation of 1,332 solar panels on the rooftops across the campus, including gym facilities, which provided an average of 15% of the school's electricity needs. Phase Two followed a year later, adding an additional 257 panels atop the carport area at the southwest gate. This expansion brought the total to 1,589 panels, enabling the project to satisfy approximately 20% of the campus's energy demand.

With a total investment of 1,589 the solar panels operate at an efficiency of 22.5%, generating approximately 1,000 MWh of power annually. Since installation, ISB has significantly reduced emissions, including CO, SO, and NOx, as well as water waste. This project not only represents a step toward sustainability but also exemplifies student leadership and advocacy in driving positive change within the school community.

Project Implementation

Project Background: In 2019, the International School of Beijing (ISB) set a target of achieving an Energy Star building score of 50 by 2025. To support this goal, students and staff conducted a comprehensive study of on-campus renewable energy options. Their analysis identified rooftop solar as the most promising solution, offering both strong financial returns and significant environmental benefits. Building on this research, the Green Impact club launched a petition in 2022 to gauge and demonstrate community support. More than 200 high school and elementary students, together with faculty and staff, signed the petition, reflecting a strong collective commitment. The proposal was then shared with the broader ISB community to further raise awareness and encourage advocacy. Following consultations with solar panel vendors and after securing approval from local authorities, the school advanced the project. In summer 2023, ISB started to install solar panels across its main rooftop. The initiative underscored the school’s dedication to the UN Sustainable Development Goals—specifically Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), and Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12).

Installment: After rounds of bidding of the vendors, ISB’s solar panel construction was prepared by Shuangjie Xinneng Co., Ltd., which is a company specialized in the development, design, construction, and operation and maintenance of photovoltaic power plants, charging stations, and microgrids. The preliminary design has a total installed capacity of 916.4 kWp. Each was planned to have 1,580 monocrystalline components with a peak power of 580 Wp. The project plans to recover its initial investment in the seventh year. Since the seven years are relatively shorter than 25 years life expectancy of the solar pads, the project is expected to bring significant reduction in the amount of energy wasted.

Phase I: In summer 2023, 1323 solar panels were initially constructed on the flat roof. Considering climate and latitude and other geographical characteristics of Shunyi, Beijing, the panels are inclined 15° to maximize the amount of sunlight that panels receive. Also, the photovoltaic modules have enough distance – approximately 1.8m-- to prevent occlusion from shadow of other panels. They generate over 20% of ISB’s demanded energy and integrate the energy into the low voltage distribution boxes at 380V.

Phase II: In 2024, the solar initiative was expanded to include the parking area near the West Gate, increasing the total number of panels from 1,323 to 1,589. With this addition, the system now generates more than 20% of the school’s total electricity demand.

Challenges: One of the main challenges was balancing project costs while reassuring the community about safety. To gain support, ISB emphasized its long-term commitment to sustainability and ensured that the system would be continuously monitored by staff. Concerns were also raised about extreme weather, particularly strong winds, and whether the panels could be maintained safely under such conditions. Another challenge was the structural load of the array, as the panels cover most of the rooftop. To address this, ISB commissioned a professional structural study, which confirmed that the roof could safely bear the additional weight. Another challenge was to get the support and approval from the local authority. Through transparent communication, technical assessments, and ongoing safety measures, the school was able to overcome these concerns and move forward with confidence.

The Result of the Project: Annual saving: ¥500,000.00; Return on Investment (ROI): 7 years; Annual power generation: 1000 mwh; Total power generation (Sep 2023 to Sep 2025): 2146853.1kWh; Power generation efficiency: 22.5%; Initial number of solar panels installed (2023): 1323; Current number of solar panels installed: 1589; Size of each solar panel: 2.278x1.134 m²; The total area covered with solar panels: 1323 x (2.278x1.134) x Cos15=3301 m².

Project Impact & Sustainability

As a K–12 school, ISB commits resources not only to education but also to initiatives we see as essential for our community and environment. With the installation of solar panels on campus, we have significantly reduced energy consumption and pollution in Beijing. When the project began in 2023, the panels generated 273,529.10 kWh of power. By 2024, output rose dramatically to 909,704 kWh, and in just the first ten months of 2025, production already reached 924,066 kWh. This growth in clean energy generation has helped ISB cut approximately 7,000 tons of carbon emissions.

Student leadership was at the heart of this initiative, proving that students can successfully advocate for institutional and financial support in advancing environmental sustainability. The project now serves as a living laboratory, offering hands-on opportunities for students to learn about renewable technology and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

While ISB is proud to be the first K-12 school in Beijing to adopt solar power at this scale, we see this as a starting point rather than an achievement. We hope our journey can provide ideas for other schools: to make use of existing resources, to trust students as leaders, and to embed sustainability into daily life. In this way, schools can both reduce costs and reinvest savings into education, while building a culture of environmental responsibility together.
