Project Overview

Wuhan Xiangyang Tower, completed in July 2023, stands at 260 meters and integrates a Grade-A office tower with a Marriott five-star hotel under single ownership. With a total floor area of 147,900 m², it is equipped with the largest high-rise strong motion monitoring array in China.

A rainwater recycling system, planned from the initial construction phase, is now in its final stage. It collects roof and site runoff, treats it through multi-stage filtration and disinfection to meet non-potable standards, and uses it for irrigation, cleaning, and landscape replenishment—effectively reducing tap water consumption. The system is expected to save over 760 tons of water annually, significantly cut municipal water reliance, alleviate drainage pressure during storms, and reduce carbon emissions.

In May 2025, Cushman & Wakefield Vanke Service property team partnered with Xiangyang Tower to host the “Rise Up, Meet in the Clouds” vertical marathon, encouraging low-carbon office practices through sports. The event attracted 132 participants challenging the 67-floor climb, supported by professional medical and safety services.

By combining rainwater reuse and green advocacy, Xiangyang Tower has built a resource-efficient and eco-friendly operational model, establishing itself as a green building benchmark in central China and providing replicable sustainable experience for similar projects.

Project Implementation

1. Rainwater Recycling System: Wuhan Xiangyang Tower, a landmark building, integrated green principles into its design in 2019 by planning a rainwater recycling system. The system features a large storage tank on the refuge floor, with dedicated pipes collecting rainwater from roofs and ground surfaces. After sedimentation, filtration, and purification, the water is used for irrigation, garage cleaning, and cooling system replenishment.

2. During implementation, challenges included seasonal rainfall variations and fluctuating water quality. Cushman & Wakefield Vanke Service’s technical team collaborated with designers to develop a customized treatment process, ensuring stable water quality through repeated simulations. The system is now in the debugging phase.

3. The project benefited from efficient internal coordination, policy guidance from Wuhan Water Authority, on-site support from equipment suppliers, and community cooperation. Once operational, it will significantly reduce municipal water consumption and costs while alleviating drainage pressure.

Project Impact & Sustainability

1. Rainwater Recycling System: The rainwater recycling system at Wuhan Xiangyang Tower features treatment processes tailored to local rainfall conditions, ensuring consistent water quality for reuse. Managed by a dedicated operations team, it serves as a replicable water-saving model for similar commercial buildings.

2. Future plans include system optimization, collaboration with research institutions to adopt new technologies, and enhanced data collection to support efficiency improvements and knowledge sharing. The project not only reduces operating costs but also offers a practical path toward green, sustainable urban development.

3. Vertical Marathon & Low-Carbon Impact: This year’s vertical marathon, organized by Cushman & Wakefield Vanke Service, was highly praised by neighboring tenants and the community for its creativity and positive impact.

4. Notably, employees of an educational tenant on floors 20–21 previously relied heavily on elevators for inter-floor travel, causing inefficiency and complaints. After the event, elevator usage between these floors decreased by 30–40%, as stair-climbing became a popular low-carbon habit during breaks. Participants and surrounding clients have expressed strong support for making this an annual activity.
